Ironworks Blue Plaque project commemorates former residents

Hooper Street

Hooper Street

Residents living on Hooper Street and Ainsworth Street have recently been involved in an exciting Blue Plaque project with Community Historian Helen Weinstein.

The project is part of the public art at our Ironworks project, run by Resonance Cambridge. Research into the former residents of the homes surrounding the site has taken place over the past few months with current residents selecting the former residents they wish to commemorate by displaying a blue plaque in their windows.

As the collection of blue plaques began to appear in windows, a snapshot of the area’s past and the lives and occupations has begun to emerge. The plaques tell the lesser-known story of the area, celebrating the often-overlooked professions that enabled a community to function.

One notable detail that has emerged is the amount of former female residents that have been chosen to be commemorated. Their plaques tell the story of the small businesses they ran from their homes and how vital and integrated this work was as the area developed.

Residents of Kingston Street, Sturton Street and Sleaford Street along with Rivar Place wishing to find out more about the history and former occupants of their homes can get involved in phase 2 of the ‘Ironworks Blue Plaque’ project.

Phase 3 will cover Gwydir Street, Milford Street, York Street and Stone Street, along with York Terrace and Abbey Walk. Anyone living on these streets wishing to get involved please contact Resonance Cambridge.

We hope everyone enjoys the trail of the Blue Plaques appearing in windows over the coming weeks and finding out about the history of former residents.
